The number of unresolved cases awaiting trial at Crown Court shot up from 38,000 before the pandemic to 75,000 in 2024. This was 11% higher than 2023, and 12,750 cases above Ministry of Justice (MoJ) predictions.

Since Labour have been in government, the prime minister, along with his ministers, has been striving for better productivity levels across the public sector, but despite injections of funding into the court system the waiting time seems to be getting worse.

In 2024 there were approximately 75,000 cases outstanding in the Crown Court system, although this is likely to increase towards 80,000 this year, possibly surpassing it.
