Is Covid-19 the final reel for UK cinemas?

Picture houses are facing epic financial challenges, but if the big studios continue to release their blockbusters in theatres, this is no time to die, argues Mercer & Hole’s Andy Turner

Covid-19 has caused significant challenges for the entertainment and leisure sector. Consumers have been forced to change their behaviour due to the lockdown measures in place, which in turn means that many in the sector have needed to change or adapt established business models in order to continue to generate income streams.

In sport, the restart of football behind closed doors means that clubs will need to reimburse season ticket cash, while future matchday revenues will be non-existent. While this may be not too much of a problem for the TV-cash rich Premier League clubs, it presents a significant challenge for the lower level clubs that do not have wealthy ownership structures.
