Covid-19 fraud down to £3.9bn

HMRC has revised estimates of the total value of error and fraud to covid support schemes putting the figure at £3.9bn, down from £5.8bn

The value of error and fraud in the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS), the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS), and Eat Out to Help Out has been revised down by £1.9bn, released in HMRC’s recent policy report. Overall, 4.8% of claims were fraudulent.

Across the full lifecycle of the schemes, the total value of error and fraud was estimated within the range of £3.2bn to £6.4bn with a most likely estimate of £4.5bn.

HMRC issued a revision on its estimates of error and fraud through conducting a random enquiry programme and compliance interventions, which has provided more certainty and information through new data. The estimates were collected by the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS).
