Digital economy: the Pandora’s box of international tax

EU plans to introduce digital taxation on the revenues of multinational technology companies are likely to face strong resistance as it considers amending the definition of a permanent establishment (PE) to include the concept of ‘virtual PE’. Rozi Ellis, associate at Milestone International Tax, considers the proposals

 

On 21 March 2018, the European Commission released a set of proposals to alter the way digital businesses are taxed in EU member states. The measures include an interim 3% tax on revenue derived by digital businesses and future proposals to amend the definition of a permanent establishment and how profits are allocated to member states.
