Dodwell: digital economy makes global tax reform difficult

Reforming international taxation to keep up to date with the digital economy is proving harder than first thought when the G20 asked the OECD to review the rules. Bill Dodwell LLB, LLM, CTA (Fellow), ACA, tax director of the Office of Tax Simplification (OTS) explains

One of the hotly-debated issues in international corporate taxation is how best to seek taxation in the light of the significant global impact of the digital economy.  The G20 asked the digital taskforce set up to look at the OECD Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) project to be reconstituted – and to report by 2020 on potential changes. 

The OECD secretariat has just given us an update on progress. This has moved from being a G20 and OECD issue to being one managed by the 127 members of the Inclusive Framework.
