Donaldson: post-Brexit VAT regime will create trade friction

Iain Donaldson, partner at Hill Dickinson, considers the barriers to frictionless trade under a post-Brexit VAT regime facing hard or soft borders

A hard Brexit would result in border friction in terms of tax, administration, regulation, compliance and cash flow. The future VAT rules for cross-border transactions will depend on the outcome of Brexit negotiations but it seems unlikely that the UK VAT system can remain without a number of adjustments and at least some increased friction.
