Fraud tops £530m in first half 2022

During the first half of 2022, the value of fraud cases worth over £100,000 increased by almost 300%, rising from £137.4m to £532.6m

According to KPMG’s UK Fraud Barometer, the total value of fraud cases in H1 2022 exceeded the whole of 2021, which reached almost £445m, demonstrating that the eruption of fraud across the UK shows little sign of slowing.

The bi-annual barometer is the longest running survey of its kind in the UK, with data being tracked since the 1980s. It considers fraud cases, as reported in the media, being heard in the UK’s Crown Courts, where charges are in excess of £100,000.

Total value of alleged fraud reaching UK Crown Courts in H1 2022 was £532.6m, an increase of 288% compared to £137.4m in H1 2021

Fraud relating to financial institutions was the highest by value at £305.2m in H1 2022, an increase of 4,333% compared with the same time last year – up from £6.3m in 2021.
