Goodwill, tax and amortisation relief post-1 April 2019

From the new tax year, businesses will have to deal with a revision to the tax treatment of amortisation relief for purchased goodwill and certain other customer-related intangibles and relevant assets. Paul Davies ACA CTA examines the rule change and impact on business tax compliance

Finance Act 2019 (FA 2019) reintroduces a limited measure of amortisation relief for purchased goodwill and certain other customer-related intangibles and relevant assets. Paul Davies ACA CTA examines the rule change and impact on business

The change to amortisation relief can be found in Corporation Tax Act 2009 (CTA 2009), Pt 8, Ch 15A and applies to accounting periods beginning on or after 1 April 2019 in relation to assets acquired on or after that date. Straddling accounting periods are treated as separate accounting periods for this purpose.

The definition of relevant asset is based on that used in the former restriction on goodwill and related assets in CTA 2009, s816A.
