HMRC advisers not using AI on helpline calls

Plans to roll out more artificial intelligence (AI) across government needs closer collaborative working between departments to reduce potential risks

After Cabinet Office officials told the Treasury Committee last week that customer service advisors across many government departments are using AI tools on phone calls, HMRC confirmed its advisers are not currently using these systems.

Although helpline staff are not using AI as yet to deal with phone callers, HMRC is trialling an AI chatbot at the beta stage on its website, where visitors can ask questions and then be directed to the correct adviser or appropriate pages on gov.uk.
