HMRC compliance hires ‘need to hit the ground running’

MPs on the Treasury Committee questioned HMRC boss about how quickly new compliance staff will be able to make an impact on tax gap, scale of farming tax and plans to implement artificial intelligence (AI)

With an imminent change of leadership at HMRC, committee chair Dame Meg Hillier addressed the succession plan for outgoing CEO Sir Jim Harra, who is retiring in April 2025, and he confirmed that the interview process has begun for this successor.

The hearing kicked off with a grilling of Harra on details of the change to agricultural property relief (APR), trying to determine what data HMRC had shared with the government before it made its decision.
