HMRC targets doorstep sellers in latest amnesty

HMRC has launched a campaign to tackle tax evasion by people selling directly to customers either on the doorstep or to businesses.

The five-month scheme is open to self-employed direct sellers, including agents, consultants, representatives or distributors, and means they will be able to pay outstanding tax bills and will face lower penalties for disclosure.

This is part of a raft of targeted campaigns to clamp down on the black economy, which have included schemes for eBay traders, mini cab drivers, fastfood takeaways, plumbers and electricians.

Nearly £510m has been raised by HMRC from campaigns, and a further £120m from follow-up activity.

Marian Wilson, head of HMRC campaigns, said: 'If you are involved in direct selling and have not told HMRC about all of your income, you may not be paying the right amount of tax. The direct selling campaign is an opportunity for you to bring your tax affairs up to date, on the best possible terms.'

The direct seller amnesty for paying all outstanding taxes and penalties is 28 February 2013. A disclosure form is available at HMRC
