How to use mediation when team members dislike each other

Dealing with staff and managers who do not get on is a real challenge, so how can you resolve the issue without resorting to dismissal?

Q: My company has appointed a new manager to support a job share and they seem to strongly dislike each other for reasons I cannot fathom. Should the company dismiss the recent hire and start again?

A: This approach is not recommended. There may be justifiable reasons as to why this relationship is not working, and it is important to try identifying them before coming to a dismissal decision.  If the company did dismiss either party, it may not solve the root cause of the difficulty. And it could end up in a very expensive recruitment loop.
