Income tax take for Scotland and Wales rises

The total amount of income tax paid in Scotland was £11.8bn, up 2.4% from the previous year and in Wales the tax take was £4.6bn, 2019-20 figures from HMRC reveal

The figures released by HMRC compare the non-saving, non-dividend income tax for Scotland and Wales with the rest of the UK, England and Northern Ireland, as both countries have devolved income tax.

The total amount of income tax for England and Northern Ireland’s taxpayers, obviously sat much higher at £164.3bn in 2019-2020 which is an increase of 2.3% compared to 2018-2019.

The income tax includes earning from employment, pensions, profits from self-employed sources and property and tax on non-saving non-dividend income in the statistics is measured as the income tax liability expected to be collected by HMRC.

The statistics show that the total number of Scottish taxpayers in 2019-20 was around 2.5m, which is an increase of 0.1% than the year previous while in Wales the taxpayer figure sat at 1.3m. The number of taxpayers in England and Northern Ireland was 28.4m, which is a 0.2% increase.
