Jobs market remained upbeat in August

Recruitment activity rose in August with continuing pressure on salary demands but a shortage of candidates across the board

Recruitment consultancies signalled increases in both permanent staff appointments and temporary billings during August. However, vacancy growth eased considerably, slipping to an 18-month low, according to the latest KPMG and Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) Report on Jobs.

Total candidate numbers fell at a slightly softer but still rapid pace, although starting pay for both permanent and temporary staff increased – due mostly to the rising cost of living.

The rate of permanent placement growth was little changed from July’s 17-month low (53.1), standing at 53.3 in August. Temporary billings expanded at the softest pace for 18 months at 56.4.

The increase in demand for staff was the weakest seen in 18 months, with recruiters signalling softer rises in both permanent and temporary vacancies.
