KPMG fined £3m over Conviviality audit failures

The audit regulator has issued multimillion pound fines to Big Four auditor KPMG and the audit engagement partner over the audits of Conviviality, the alcohol wholesaler and retailer which went bust in April 2018

The company called in administrators after identifying a material error in its financial forecasts and an unexpected £30m tax bill.

Following a long-running investigation, first announced in 2018, the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) has issued a final decision notice under the audit enforcement procedure and imposed sanctions against KPMG LLP and audit engagement partner, Nicola Quayle, in relation to the statutory audit of the financial statements of Conviviality plc for the financial years ended 30 April 2017 and 29 April 2018. KPMG was auditor of Conviviality for two years until it went into administration.
