Majority plan to use AI for tax returns ignoring risk

Despite warnings from accountants, three out of four people say they plan to use AI tools to assist with completion of their next self assessment

Individual taxpayers are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) tools faster than expected, citing convenience, preference to searching HMRC website and low prices, if not free nature of the options, but this comes with risks, warns Taxfix.

With the self assessment tax deadline of 31 January 2026 fast approaching and HMRC’s automatic £100 penalty fine for late filing in place, too many taxpayers think they can do the annual admin quicker this tax year with the help of AI.

Three quarters of taxpayers surveyed by Taxfix said they would use an AI tool of some kind. Most cited was ChatGPT at 55%, followed by Microsoft Co-Pilot at 12%, and Gemini at 10%.
