MPs blast HMRC over excessive number of senior staff

Despite millions in funding, HMRC productivity levels continue to decline with large number of staff in senior positions, accusations of special treatment for high net worth taxpayers and an inundation of calls from pensioners

Not only have frozen thresholds forced pensioners into tax brackets but has also pushed millions more people into paying tax either for the first time or being moved into higher thresholds.

Speaking at a Public Accounts Committee hearing about HMRC, Clive Betts, Labour MP for Sheffield South East questioned why this was such a problem now, when in 2022 an impact assessment predicted it would not be an issue.
