Nightmare of zombie companies haunts business world

A plague of walking dead businesses could drag down the whole economy, but entrepreneurs can fight back with healthy balance sheets and a determination to adapt and avoid the zombie shuffle, says ReSolve’s Mark Supperstone

As we approach Hallowe’en, do you remember The Walking Dead and the George A Romero films? Stumbling, staggering hordes of zombies, barely alive, barely sentient, but with an insatiable desire to feed on the living.

Zombie companies, the ‘undead’ of the business world, may not be so scary but they are just as destructive.

A zombie company is, quite simply, a company that is still breathing but not really living. It is a company that is in so much debt that it is unable to grow and or compete but, due to rock bottom interest rates, can keep turning over just enough to keep its debtors at bay while not moving forward or innovating.
