Non doms will leave despite concession from Chancellor

A last minute amendment to Finance Bill is unlikely to change non dom minds as accountants report many clients are planning to get out of the country in the next five years

For accountants the challenge is to try to reassure non dom clients, who are facing huge decisions about their future, compounded by uncertainty about the scope of the final rules.

An extension to the expatriation facility is not the biggest concern for non doms and will stop departure plans. It was Labour’s decision at the Budget last autumn to extend inheritance tax on overseas wealth to non-doms, which was really the catalyst for decisions to leave the UK.

Advisers are reporting that many clients do not want to leave the UK where they have strong ties, businesses and family roots with children in schools, but they are considering longer term plans to depart.
