Radical changes to pensions are
looming, but the details are still vague, says Graham Duckett.
George Osborne described the emergency Budget he presented in
June as ‘unavoidable’, and changes to pension tax relief
were debated in the weeks that preceded the announcement –
would the government decrease the amount of relief given to high earners?
Would they cut the annual allowance, or would they even go so far
as to abolish higher rate tax relief altogether? In fact no decision
was made; the chancellor announced that the government is working
on ‘alternative ways’ to implement restrictions on pension
tax relief.
One of
