The coalition is relying on the 50% tax row to distract attention from grim financial news, says Chris Wales

The politics of the 50% tax cut debate runs quite nicely for the Conservatives and they have played their cards particularly well. There is no intention to abolish the rate in the near term but, in the Machiavellian way that politics is shaped, the recent furore will help to lift their poll ratings through the autumn.

The government is going through a difficult period on its economic policy agenda and the recent data has been uniformly gloomy.
