The announcement about legal action in the new year came as figures showed that parents who send their children to private school will see bills increase by over £3,000 on average.

Private school fees are expected to rise from £17,128 on average per year to £20,596, a rise of £3,648 due to 20% VAT on school fees.

An appeal supported by the Independent Schools Council (ISC) is heading to the High Court, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves having two weeks to respond.
