Spring Statement: HMRC to stifle tax avoidance promoters

The government is planning to ramp up activity to stamp out promoters and enablers of tax avoidance schemes with very tough regime

It has issued a warning telling taxpayers to ‘steer clear’ and ‘permanently exit’ the use of tax avoidance.

Now HMRC has issued a consultation setting out a number of hefty measures to ‘close in on’ promoters of tax avoidance with plans for an ultra stop notice, strengthening DOTAS rules and expansion of criminal prosecution activity.

The key proposals will expand and strengthen the disclosure of tax avoidance schemes (DOTAS), introduce the first universal stop notices and promoter action notices, and new powers to clamp down the owners and controllers of tax avoidance promoters.
