HMRC has issued guidance for companies which have climate change agreements (CCAs) and receive more than €500,000 (£447,000) a year in state aid through payments, with reporting requirements set to come in from April 2017
CCAs are voluntary agreements made by UK industry and the Environment Agency to reduce energy use and CO2 emissions. In return, operators receive a discount on the climate change levy (CCL).
The guidance states that companies which receive more than €500,000 a year in state aid as a result will need to report certain details to HMRC.
These include company name and address; VAT number; whether the company is a micro company, SME or large company; where it is based; the main activity for which the aid is received and the total amount; the total number of target units and facilities; and the start date of the reporting period.
This information will be supplied to the European Commission which will publish the details each year on its website.
Companies need to give the details at the end of each reporting period. The first reporting period is from 1 July 2016 to 31 March 2017. All other reporting periods will run from 1 April to 31 March.
HMRC is producing a new online form which will be available for companies to report from 1 April 2017.
