UK economy grows ‘surprise’ 0.5% in February

After months of tepid growth, GDP rose 0.5% in February across all main sectors, with manufacturing and public sector construction spend picking up, in a surprise positive for the economy

Monthly services output grew by 0.3% in February 2025, following unrevised growth of 0.1% in January 2025, and was up 0.6% in the three months to February 2025. This was driven by the IT and telecoms with 2.2% growth, while retail and car sales were also up.

In a boost for the economy, manufacturing was up 1.5% in February, the main contributor to the positive growth, the latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures showed.

Certain parts of the services sector were squeezed, including financial, insurance, and accounting, but this is cyclical, as the overall quarterly figures were strong with an average 0.7% growth.
