UK job vacancies are on the rise as competition for jobs cools, while wages are only slowly edging upwards, according to research from Adzuna which identifies the accounting and finance sector as one of the top three for growth
The employment job engine specialist’s latest UK job market report shows that vacancies are up 3.5% from 1,088,353 in January to 1,126,376 in February. In contrast, advertised wages creep gradually upwards, increasing just 0.3% from £32,420 in January to £32,520 in February.
Year-on-year percentage increases for both salaries and vacancies are at their joint lowest since 2015, at 0.9%. However, UK salaries are continuing to increase month-on-month and have steadily increased over the past four months. In similar fashion, UK vacancies have reached a four-month high, as total figures for April 2017 are currently at 1,156,701.
The research suggests HR and recruitment jobs are currently the best performing sectors in terms of wage growth, representing an annual increase of 4.6% to stand at £32,042. The accounting and finance sector reported a 0.6% increase over 12 months, with the average salary now standing at £37,425 and 82,107 vacancies.
With competition per vacancy cooling off following a rise in advertised openings, the labour market at present has become saturated with multiple opportunities for jobseekers and employees of all skill sets at different levels.
Doug Monro, co-founder of Adzuna, said: ‘It is promising to see wage growth slowly starting to pick up following the recent dry spell. Although wage growth is currently not progressing at an optimal level, jobseekers and employees should not be discouraged. With Article 50 about to be triggered, Brexit plans are starting to take shape and with the jobs market leading decision making, it is likely that the UK labour market will not be left short changed.’
