2022 review: turbulence breeds toughness

John Edwards, chief executive of the Institute of Financial Accountants (IFA) looks at how the accountancy sector has fared during a turbulent year

2022 saw digitalisation and sustainability becoming more embedded in accountancy practice, as clients sought improved efficiencies and increased engagement with investors and stakeholders.

This time last year I was asked to make my predictions for 2022. Among them were digitalisation, artificial intelligence (AI), the drive for sustainability, cryptocurrency, and blockchain, with good prospects for technological growth. At the time it looked like businesses would start to get back to normal and there would be a settling of the dust after a long period of market upheaval.
