Why turnover is a poor measure of business health

Susan Perry, founder of Cooper Accountancy says over-reliance on turnover figures is a mistake as profitability, cash flow and credit control matter just as much, if not more

For many business owners, turnover is the number they tend to pay the most attention to. Running a business is hard and while owners may celebrate the money coming in, it’s really important not to base too much on the turnover number and instead ensure an understanding of the wider picture.

Turnover numbers are often presented as the ultimate measure of business success. But turnover alone says very little about the health of a business. A company can be generating hundreds of thousands of pounds in revenue and still struggle to make a meaningful profit.
