5.7m taxpayers still to file tax returns

HMRC is reminding 5.7 million taxpayers to file their self assessment returns before the 31 January deadline, or they will face automatic £100 penalties

More than 12m people are scheduled to complete self assessment tax returns for tax year 2021-22, and the number of returns outstanding is comparable to last year.

Over the new year period nearly 42,000 taxpayers completed their return.

The deadline to file and pay any tax owed for the 2021 to 2022 tax year is 31 January 2023, and the tax authority has urged taxpayers to submit their returns on time or they may face a penalty.
