A lot of our imagery and connotations with the word ‘slavery’ comes from the outdated and very transparent historic examples of slave masters and the slave trade. It was obvious, transparent and openly traded, which makes it easy for us all to dismiss the idea of slavery in modern Britain.

Yet there are currently 1,800 active law enforcement modern day slavery investigations in the UK, and the ‘It Still Happens Here’ report produced by The Centre for Social Justice highlights at least 100,000 potential victims of modern slavery here in Britain.

The challenge when it comes to quantifying the issue is that modern slavery is now an underground crime, operated by criminal gangs and organisations, exploiting victims for little or no pay and giving them little or no control over their own lives.
