The accountant’s role in shareholder disputes

When shareholder disputes arise, accountants can often find themselves in the middle of the disagreement, being called upon as independent advisers to try to resolve the issue, explains Andrew Perkins, shareholder dispute solicitor at Ashfords LLP

Accountants enjoy a unique position in relation to both the businesses they advise and the shareholders who own them. Often the accountant will be an adviser to both the company and the shareholders - advising the board in relation to day-to-day reporting and compliance, giving guidance on tax issues, undertaking the annual audit, perhaps providing payroll services and even transactional advice whilst perhaps also representing the shareholders in relation to their own tax affairs, estate planning or even in relation to external investments.
