It is early days but the Scottish government has been consulting on plans to charge a cruise ship levy with four possible approaches, but has not decided what the actual tax would cost.

The options are a levy paid on the gross tonnage of the ship, total passenger capacity, number of actual passengers when ship calls in at a Scottish port, or per head on individual passengers disembarking for a temporary visit while at a port, which sounds problematic to manage and administer.
