Chris Wales was left disconsolate by the tone of the Autumn Statement and expects little respite from the economic woes in 2012

Happy New Year! Of course it’s really no such thing. It’s quite a dreadful New Year, particularly if you listen to the Chancellor of the Exchequer or the Governor of the Bank of England. We all knew that the Autumn Statement would paint an unusually bleak view of the prospects for the next few years and George Osborne, at the despatch box with his characteristic smile, duly delivered the bad news on 29 November.
