Farmers cannot ‘rethink businesses on a whim’

MPs call on government to delay changes to agricultural property relief by a year to April 2027 to allow for proper consultation and a more coherent tax policy

A major overhaul of the inheritance tax (IHT) rules from April 2026, less than a year away, will see the current agricultural property relief (APR) and business property relief (BPR) regimes swept away, giving farmers little time to seek professional advice and review succession planning.

Members of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Committee want the government to delay releasing the final framework rules for APR and BPR until later in the year in October to allow for proper consultation and cost evaluation, and to shift the start date to April 2027.
