Fat tax on table to tackle holiday hunger

In the wake of the campaign for free school meals during the summer holidays, RSM’s Chris Etherington looks at what other options are on the menu to tackle childhood hunger

Following Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford’s campaign for free school meals to continue through the 2020 summer holidays, there remain questions about whether more should be done to address the issue of ‘holiday hunger’.

The term ‘holiday hunger’ is a contemporary one referring to children hit by food insecurity during the holiday period. For example, children having to skip meals or limit the amount of food they eat.

It’s a prevalent issue. The Food Foundation highlighted that over 200,000 children have skipped a meal due to lack of access to food during the Coronavirus lockdown period. While there are calls for the ‘summer food fund’ to be made permanent, few ideas have emerged about how this might be funded.
