The latest HMRC tax figures showed fuel duty revenues in decline for another month, with £10bn raised from April to August this year, down by £100m in just five months, but down £378m in the last 12 months. With more EVs coming on line, fuel duty revenues are going in just one direction.

In August 2025 alone fuel duty raised £2.0bn, but this was down from £2.05bn on the same month in 2024, bearing in mind the height of the summer holiday season is one of the busiest period for drivers.  

Despite the falling fuel duties, most other tax revenue was higher once again in the August 2025 tax figures. Gross HMRC tax and NICs receipts for April 2025 to August 2025 were £364.6bn, which was £22.1bn higher than the same period last year. Income tax, national insurance and capital gains tax continues to soar as fiscal drag has its damaging effect, with tax take from these three taxes alone up by £20bn this tax year.
