For International Women’s Day, Stephanie Rix, chief people officer at HLB, asks why if two in five accountants are women, they are still incredibly rare at the top of accountancy firms
Look around the average financial services firm and you’ll find two in five accountants are women. But peek into the board room, and just under a quarter of the people there will be female. Venture into the CEO’s office and you’ll find a woman sat behind the desk at just one in eight businesses.
That’s because, of the top 100 accounting firms, only 12 are women-led and only nine have above 40% female representation on their board.
In recent times, we’ve seen movements like International Women’s Day make great strides towards reversing this traditional and frankly outdated way of working. But there is still much more that can be done when it comes to encouraging women to smash the so-called glass ceiling and achieve their true potential.
