Government under pressure to delay NICs hike

More pressure has been put on the government to halt the National Insurance Contributions (NICs) increase amid the rising cost of living and surging energy prices

A number of MPs including Jacob Rees-Mogg on Wednesday, have come forward to urge the chancellor to halt the hike to NICs in April in order to alleviate the strain on people's finances as inflation rises above the current 5.1%.

Rees-Mogg told the cabinet that since the tax increase was agreed in September before the rising rate of inflation and energy bills and looks set to cause a ‘cost of living crisis’ if the tax rise goes ahead.

The NIC increase proposal, however, was met by backlash from Tory MPs as being ‘un-conservative’ with Lord David Frost resigning from the government over it and the Covid-19 restrictions in December, however, only 10 Tory MPs voted against the proposals at the time.
