HMRC criticised for ‘lack of curiosity’ about tax evasion

MPs on Public Accounts Committee criticise HMRC over its effectiveness in clamping down on tax evasion, saying it has a ‘lack of curiosity’ about extent of problem

The PAC is calling for a clear strategy to tackle tax evasion and increased powers for public bodies to address fraud. The committee said it was imperative for HMRC to work more closely with Companies House and the Insolvency Service to stop fraud perpetrated by bogus companies, estimated to account for between 5% and 20% of registered companies.
