HMRC uses anti-spoofing software to detect deepfake callers

Over 3,000 PAYE taxpayers have been signed up to a voice recognition system for a six-week trial, but how will HMRC detect potential fraudulent deepfake calls using artificial intelligence?

The initial trial for the voice ID technology began on 24 February and will run for six weeks. HMRC plans to sign up 3,000 PAYE taxpayers to the pilot using helpline advisers at call centres to ask people if they would like to opt in to the trial.

HMRC has said the benefits of the system were that it is easier than the current security system as passwords and security questions will not have to be remembered, and it is time saving, secure, and quick and easy to use.
