How overseas hiring is reshaping accountancy salaries

With a talent shortage in the UK accountancy sector, some firms are looking to hire from overseas, with the UK in the top three global hirers, but what are the pitfalls. Matt Monette, country lead UK&I, Deel explains

The UK accountancy sector is facing a significant talent shortage, with firms struggling to recruit skilled professionals to fill critical roles. In September 2024, Skills England identified accounting and finance technicians as one of the 10 most critically in-demand occupations.

As demand for accountants continues to rise, many employers are turning to global talent to bridge the talent and hiring gap.

Hiring from abroad presents both opportunities and challenges. On one hand, it helps address staff shortages and brings diverse expertise into an organisation. On the other, it raises questions about visas, parity of qualification systems and potential retraining requirements.
