Eight of the places in the UK where the most inheritance tax (IHT) is paid are to be found in London’s leafiest and richest boroughs with a total of £673m paid by just 895 estates, leaving descendants of these London residents with an average bill of £752,000, shows the latest 2022-23 IHT figures released by HMRC with geographic breakdowns.

Kensington, Chelsea & Fulham, and Finchley & Golders Green, accounted for 25% of the tax paid in a single year by the main IHT payers in London boroughs.
