David Friehling, the accountant charged with fraud over his role as Bernard Madoff's auditor, faces an extra month of legal limbo, after prosecutors filed a continuance with the court.
Arrested last month, having been charged by the US Securities and Exchange Commission with fraud for claiming to audit financial statements and disclosures from 1991 to 2008 of Bernard Madoff Investment Securities, prosecutors now have another 30 days to file further charges against Friehling, or negotiate a plea bargain between him and his attorney.
'The government has requested a continuance of 30 days to engage in further discussions with counsel about the disposition of this case,' the order in Manhattan federal court said, according to Reuters.
Friehling was released on a $2.5m(£1.7m) personal recognisance bond that had to be guaranteed with four of his real estate properties. His passport has also been surrendered to authorities and his travel has been restricted as part of the bond. If convicted, he could reportedly face 105 years in prison.
