MTD education needs to improve before 2026

Making Tax Digital (MTD) for income tax is coming in for self employed and landlords with turnover above £50,000 from 2026, but many do not understand if they are caught by the rules

More than one in five (21%) landlords and self employed taxpayers due to fall under Making Tax Digital (MTD) regime do not believe they will be affected by the new rules, according to a survey by software company Intuit.

Additionally, 25% of those surveyed did not know whether MTD for income tax will apply to them, although a surprisingly high 59% claimed to be fully aware of their tax obligations.

The lack of information for taxpayers highlighted how much work HMRC still needs to do to ramp up awareness campaigns for taxpayers. Just 36% of those that said they would have to comply with MTD in future, knew what they would have to do.
