EXCLUSIVE: HMRC hits half a million Making Tax Digital sign-ups

Four in 10 taxpayers not signed up for Making Tax Digital

Over 500,000 people are registered for MTD with just hours to go until the final deadline, HMRC reveals, with four in 10 taxpayers still not signed up

Official figures from HMRC show that more than 500,000 self employed and landlords had signed up to Making Tax Digital for Income Tax as of Wednesday afternoon this week.

Anyone who fails to sign up by the deadline will be contacted by HMRC by post.

HMRC said ‘customers signed up to MTD for Income Tax who miss the 7 August deadline will receive a reminder letter’.

This could affect at least the estimated 364,000 – more than four in 10 – of the £50,000 income cohort who have still not signed up, with the final deadline of 23.59pm on Friday 7 August when the first quarterly update has to be filed.
