NAO meeting considers value for money reporting

The National Audit Office has held the second meeting of the Local Government Reference Panel - a group set up to consult local government on value for money issues.

Chaired by Carolyn Downs, chief executive of the Local Government Association, the panel discussed the draft Local Audit Bill which proposes the future of local government audit following the imminent closure of the Audit Commission. It also discussed the NAO's value for money strategy.

The meeting gave the watchdog the opportunity to seek feedback on the forthcoming value for money reports and discuss ideas for new studies.

The inspection function of the Commission has already ended with the work of the in-house audit practice outsourced to the private sector.

Lynda McMullan, assistant auditor general with responsibility for local government audit, said: 'Consultation with the sector is even more important as the draft Local Audit Bill makes its way through parliament. We're committed to working with all parties to make the new arrangements a success.'

New audit arrangements will see the NAO produce value for money reports each year on issues affecting the sector. It is currently working on a brace of audits for local transport and financial sustainability in local government.

The panel, which meets twice a year, will next get together in Q2 2013.
