NHS pension overhaul brings tax changes

Changes to pension rules for NHS staff including doctors and nurses will remove some of the tax barriers preventing staff from working

Proposed changes set out by the government will bring about amendments to the pension rules regarding inflation and also enable skilled staff to continue in the NHS beyond retirement age.

Launching an eight-week consultation, ministers said the plans to overhaul NHS pension rules would help to retain more senior doctors in the health service and ease pressures for the service over the winter.

This will include changes to the pension rules regarding inflation so that senior clinicians are not taxed more than is necessary.
