The move would see a clampdown on companies abusing the system by not paying interns while expecting them to work without any financial compensation, in the worst cases for three to six months of unpaid work. 

Accountancy and finance firms are one of the biggest users of internships with 72% offering intern slots in 2024, up from 64% six years ago, making the sector the fourth largest user of interns after real estate, IT and construction.
