Months of criticism and poor local election results have followed the shock abolition of the winter fuel allowance for all but the poorest pensioners late July as soon as Labour came to power.

Now Sir Keir Starmer has caved to pressure and told MPs at PMQs that the government is reviewing the policy, as he wanted to ensure ‘more pensioners are eligible for winter fuel payments’.
