Before the new PM Andy Burnham entered No.10 Downing Street for the first time, he made a brief speech without notes or usual lectern, saying he would create ‘a new political model and a new economic model’.

Met by rapturous applause as he walked up Downing Street as PM, and no blaring music from demonstrators which has now been banned by the Metropolitan Police, Burnham promised to change politics, while acknowledging he was ‘acutely conscious that I am the sixth person in the last 10 years to walk up this street, the seventh prime minister since 2016’.

Famed for his Manchesterism vision, Burnham said he wants to see growth in every post code in the country and will devolve powers from Westminster and Whitehall. He will also set a 10-year plan for the country.
